Recipe Ingredient Analysis
Eagle Pack Original Adult Natural Dry Food, Lamb & Rice Formula was selected as the representative product for this recipe ingredient analysis. Ingredients are listed for this recipe based on their overall weight in the formula. This weight includes each ingredient’s water content.
Lamb Meal is the first ingredient listed for this dog food. This meat meal is a concentrated protein powder produced by rendering lamb meat. Meat meal is used as a protein source in pet foods because it contains more protein per ounce than fresh and raw meat ingredients. This is because moisture is removed during the rendering process, which eliminates the water content’s effect on the ingredient’s overall weight.
In addition to being a high-quality protein source, lamb meal is packed with essential minerals like calcium to support bone health. Additionally, it can be a good alternative for dogs who are tired of chicken or beef-flavored foods. The second ingredient is oatmeal. Oatmeal is a high-fiber, nutrient-rich grain packed with vitamin B and linoleic acid to keep your dog’s skin healthy and their coat shiny.
Additionally, this grain serves as an excellent alternative carb source for dogs sensitive to wheat. Ground Brown Rice is the third listed ingredient. In addition to being high in easily-digestible dietary fiber, this grain is packed with vitamin D and calcium to promote healthy bones. It also contains plenty of iron and riboflavin to support your dog’s immune system.
The fourth listed ingredient is dehulled barley. Dehulled barley is high in fiber for digestive support and high in carbohydrates for energy. This cereal grain is also an excellent source of B-vitamins like niacin, which are essential in food-to-energy conversion and nervous system functions.
Chicken fat preserved in mixed tocopherols is the fifth ingredient on this list. This animal fat is a by-product of chicken rendering and is included to provide a necessary boost to this formula’s overall fat content and to increase flavor. Chicken fat is also rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which support cell health.
The mixed tocopherols mentioned here are antioxidants used to naturally preserve the chicken fat. They keep the product from spoiling while it sits on shelves. The sixth ingredient listed is chicken meal. Similar to lamb meal, chicken meal is a by-product produced by rendering chicken. Dog food manufacturers use this ingredient as another source of animal protein.
Brewers dried yeast is the seventh listed ingredient. This by-product of beer production provides essential amino acids and B vitamins, which support brain and muscle health and functionality. Brewers yeast can be controversial, however, with critics citing that it can be a potential allergen.
The eighth ingredient listed in this recipe is tomato pomace. Tomato pomace is a high-fiber, antioxidant-rich by-product of processing tomatoes. This ingredient can also be controversial though, as it’s questionable if any of the tomato’s nutritional value survives processing and makes it into the food.
Listed ninth in this recipe is anchovy and sardine meal. This concentrated powder is a combined by-product of rendering anchovies and sardines and serves as an additional animal protein source. This meat meal is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids to support skin and coat health.
Rice is the final listed ingredient in this recipe. This grain is high in carbs that will energize your dog. Unlike brown rice, however, regular rice is not known for having much nutritional content and some critics may view this ingredient as an inexpensive filler.
This concludes the first ten, most prevalent ingredients that make up our representative dog food product. Now, we’ll take a look at some of the ingredients farther down the list, which you may want to consider before purchasing this dog food.
Less Prevalent Ingredients
Flaxseed is also included among this product’s ingredients. This plant is rich in omega-3 and 6 to nourish your dog’s skin and coat, as well as alpha-linolenic acid to relieve joint inflammation and boost immune health. This formula also contains added taurine and inulin. Taurine is beneficial for heart health and inulin supports the digestive system.
Several kinds of fermentation products are also listed further down. These ingredients act as natural probiotics and are added to support healthy digestion in your dog. Finally, this recipe is made with green tea extract. This extract is known to contain powerful antioxidants known as catechins. Catechins provide significant benefits to the cardiovascular system.
Nutrient Summary
We calculated the nutrient data for this summary based on our representative product’s dry matter content. The Guaranteed Analysis panel is used in this process to compare protein, fat, fiber, and moisture levels in pet food products. Due to the structure of this analysis and its reliance on moisture content, it is difficult to compare dry dog food products with wet dog food products.
As such, this information should be considered in comparison to other dry, kibble-based options. Eagle Pack Original Adult Natural Dry Food, Lamb & Rice Formula has a protein content of 23%. It sources this protein primarily from quality lamb meal and chicken meal.
This recipe has a fat content of 12%, which falls much lower than many dry dog food options. Much of that fat comes from the added chicken fat. With this low-fat content, this product will fuel your dog without making them pack on extra pounds.
Finally, this formula consists of an estimated 47% carbohydrates. These carbs are primarily from oatmeal, brown rice, and dehulled barley, all of which are easily-digestible and which provide additional vitamins and minerals. This kibble is also omega-rich and packed with a balanced mix of essential vitamins, such as niacin and riboflavin, and minerals such as taurine and calcium carbonate. Overall, this is a dry food made to ensure that all of your pet’s systems stay healthy and strong.
Our Rating of Eagle Pack Dog Food
As a whole, Eagle Pack brand dog food products average out to 28% protein, 14% fat, and an estimated 50% carbohydrates. This contributes to a fat-to-protein ratio of 50%. In comparison to other dry dog food products, Eagle Pack dog food has an average amount of protein and carbs and a lower amount of fat. We consider Eagle Pack to be a higher-grade brand of dog food. This brand includes both dry and wet dog food products containing wholesome grains and a complete package of essential vitamins and minerals.
Additionally, the brand features specialized formulas for varying life stages and activity levels, as well as specialized formulas for large and giant, and small breed dogs. This brand’s products also contain no artificial colors, artificial flavors, or artificial preservatives. With all this in mind, we give Eagle Pack dog food a rating of 4 stars.
What Do Others Say About Eagle Pack
Eagle Pack dog food products currently have Amazon ratings of 4 to 4.5 stars, with our representative product Eagle Pack Original Adult Natural Dry Food, Lamb & Rice Formula earning a 4.5-star rating. Fans of the Eagle Pack brand praise these food products for being energizing, healthy, and weight-conscious. Here is a review from an actual Eagle Park customer:
“I have been a dog owner for 35 years and Eagle Pack is undoubtedly the best dog food I’ve ever found. My first Basset Hound, Stretch, was suffering from arthritis when he was just 9 years old. The vet said that was normal and that Bassets only live to be 9 – 11 y/o often because the arthritis in their hips gets them down and they just sort of give up.
Stretch was my baby, so I was extremely upset to think that I might lose him. I went into a local feed store and the owner told me about Eagle Pack Senior. I started him on it that day and within 30 days, Stretch was hopping around like a puppy. That was in 1999. Stretch lived to be nearly 14 y/o and I honestly credit Eagle Pack for much of that.
I continue to feed my dogs and cats Eagle Pack. Currently my oldest dog (Basset Hound – German Shepherd mix) will be 15 y/o on July 4th. Our vets are impressed with how healthy our cats and dogs are. I believe what you feed them has a tremendous impact on their overall health and appearance. I’ve never had a fat animal. Eagle Pack helps them to maintain a healthy weight.
Prior to 1999, I fed my dogs a grocery store brand and it went right through them. It might have filled them up hunger-wise, but they didn’t get much nutrition and pooped out most of it. Probably because there was not enough protein content. This is not the case with EP. I recently came across an article rating dry dog food and yes, Eagle Pack was on the list. And it’s American-made!”
