Canidae Dog Food Review 2022: Prices, Quality, Nutrients

Most dog owners agree that the health and happiness of their canine companions are as important as the health and happiness of the rest of the family. They also agree that nutrition and diet are integral to health and happiness.
However, finding the right brand of dog food for the unique nutritional needs of your dog is quite a challenge, and if your household is one with several dogs in different life stages, the task becomes even more challenging. A brand with an option for all life stages would be a big plus. Furthermore, every time you go to the store, there are new brands with clever marketing ploys to confuse you even more.
Dog Food Care wants to ease this process. We recommend going for the older, more established brands, at least until the new brands have stood the test of time. One such brand is Canidae, with experience in the dog food manufacturing industry for decades. Their mantra is “Pet food made by pet people.”
Their track records on integrity, quality of production processes, and use of top-grade ingredients over the years are unquestionable. Canidae, which has been formulating dog foods since 1966, has a solid foundation, reputation, and testimonials. Canidae food has only ever been recalled once, and that was a voluntary recall.
The recall was issued on May 5th, 2012, due to fear of Salmonella contamination. The Canidae’s dog food products that were recalled were being manufactured by Diamond at the time, and none of the recalled products tested positive for Salmonella. That is absolutely phenomenal for a dog food company. This speaks to the high processing standards that Canidae subscribes to.

Is Canidae a Complete and Balanced Dog Food?
Choosing the best food for your furry family member is a challenge and not a job to do without doing your research. Even though Canidae is a top-rated company that produces high-quality foods, it is not necessarily the right choice for everyone. Can you trust the manufacturer’s claim that the dog food is “Complete and Balanced?”
For any dog food to be marketed as “Complete and Balanced,“ it must meet the nutritional standards established by AAFCO–an acronym for the Association of American Feed Control Officials, a non-profit organization that sets standards for pet foods in the United States.
These nutritional adequacy standards are defined by two nutrient profiles based on a dog’s stage of life.
- Adult maintenance
- Growth and reproduction
You might see “(the dog food name) is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO (Dog) Food Nutrient Profiles for (the dog’s life stage)” on a dog food label. It verifies that the dog food meets AAFCO’s nutrient profiles. However, there is no law making such testing, analysis, or inclusion on dog food labels compulsory in the US.

Who owns Canidae Dog Food?
Canidae is an independent, family-owned pet food brand offering healthy options made with all-natural ingredients. The company was founded back in 1996 in San Luis Obispo, California, with this core value and is continually adding products and services to ensure its customer’s needs are always being met. Canidae offers healthy pet food options for all of your furry friends.
The Ethos Pet Nutrition Facility and Canidae Farms initiatives have proven the dedication Canidae has towards sustainable, organic pet food products. In 2012, Canidae built a state-of-the-art facility in Brownwood, Texas that allowed the company to continue to research and develop different pet food formulations. The Ethos Pet Nutrition Facility exemplified the innovative efforts Canidae makes towards improving their product line. The Ethos Facility includes an on-site lab that tests different ingredients and formulations to help come up with new, exciting ways to make pet food
In 2017, the Canidae Farms initiative was brought to fruition with the introduction of a Canidae farm in Kansas. This is the first step in their long-term goal of only using ingredients that Canidae is actively involved in growing. It also will strengthen the environmental sustainability push Canidae is making by using no-till farming and forward thinking-technologies to control pests and weeds on their farm.

Below is a table showing the summarized AAFCO analysis and rating for the chosen products to represent each Canidae sub-brand. It is a helpful tool for selecting quality dog food. However, reach out to your veterinarian for guidance if you are unsure about the best food for your dog.

AAFCO rates most of the wet and dry Canidae dog foods M (Maintenance), those formulated for puppies are rated G (Growth), and A (All Life Stages) for the foods named All Life Stages. Remember, your dog’s overall health, metabolism, breed size and food-related sensitivities make your doggy dude unique, and must be considered when you select a dog food brand. And when in doubt, consult a veterinarian for help.
When Dog Food Care reviews and rates a dog food brand, we consider the important aspects, some of which are listed below.
- Is the protein content high enough to maintain strong, lean muscles?
- Is the carbohydrate content low enough to maintain healthy blood sugar levels?
- Are the meat sources specified by name to show the genuine source of amino acids?
- Does the formula include meat by-products?
- What is the level and quality of fatty acids like linoleic, Omega-3, and Omega-6?
- Which fresh vegetables and legumes were included as sources of minerals and digestible vitamins?

This formula is vet-formulated to meet the nutritional needs of all breeds, sizes, as well as less active dogs and seniors.
The nutrition-dense recipe has been crafted with chicken meal as the first ingredient. Turkey meal and lamb meal are also included to promote lean muscle growth and maintain optimal body mass.
Analyzing the first 10 ingredients in dog food is a great way to understand the overall nutrient content of the dog food because AAFCO requires all dog food ingredients to be listed in order of predominance by their weight.
The first two ingredients in the Canidae All Life Stages Multi-Vitamin Formula are chicken and turkey meal, which are about 300% more concentrated in protein than fresh chicken and turkey. That is because about 73% of fresh poultry is water that is lost during the cooking process. Adding the chicken and turkey meal will replace the lost proteins. Another protein-rich ingredient is lower down the list in the form of lamb meal.
Next on the list is a range of ingredients that supply fiber, carbs, and additional protein, including brown rice, peas, barley, lentils, and sun-cured alfalfa meal. Gluten-free fiber-rich ingredients include whole grain sorghum and oatmeal, which are also rich in B vitamins. Adding several plant-based proteins is typically questioned, and seen as a way to limit the costs of animal protein.
Flaxseed appears lower down the list and is yet another protein-rich item. However, flaxseed is also one of the best plant sources of healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Provided they’ve first been ground into a meal, flax seeds are also rich in soluble fiber.
Chicken fat is the source of healthy fat, obtained by skimming the fat off the soupy water after cooking the chicken. Chicken fat is high in linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid essential for life. Although it doesn’t sound very appetizing, chicken fat is actually a quality ingredient.
Next, the ingredients list shows the minerals are not chelated, except for zinc. Minerals not chemically attached to proteins make them tougher to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods. We also noticed Taurine on the ingredients list, an important amino acid associated with the healthy function of heart muscle
Toward the end of the list, you’ll find all those unpronounceable ingredients, including fermentation products, which are probiotics necessary for gut health. Only one controversial ingredient, sodium selenite, appears on the list. Sadly, despite a wealth of research that proves sodium selenite can be toxic to animals including our pets, a large majority of pet food manufacturers continue to use sodium selenite instead of the scientifically proven safer alternative selenium yeast.
As a group, the Canidae grain inclusive range features an average protein content of 27% and a mean fat level of 12%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 53% for the overall product line, and a fat-to-protein ratio of about 45%. All this means Canidae All Life Stages Kibble contains above-average protein, below-average fat, and above-average carbs when compared to a typical dry dog food.
Even when you consider the effect of the plant-based proteins, this looks like the profile of a kibble containing a notable amount of meat. Canidae All Life Stages is a dry dog food using a notable amount of named meat meals as its dominant source of meat, thus earning the brand 4.5 stars.
Canidae Grain-Free is a dry dog food that is highly recommended by Dog Food Care.
2. Nutritional Profile of Canidae All Life Stages Canned Food with Grains
Like the dry version, Canidae® All Life Stages, wet dog food recipes are vet-formulated for dogs of all ages, breeds, and sizes. This “one can fits all” blend makes mealtimes for multiple dog households a breeze. Knowing that you can feed your furry friends, from the littlest to the most senior, with the same cans of Canidae All Life Stages Formula Wet Dog Food, makes feeding several dogs a breeze.
Dog Food Care chose the Canidae All Life Stages Chicken and Rice canned food to represent the 4 Canidae recipes of this variety.

Analyzing the first 10 ingredients in dog food is a great way to understand the overall nutrient content of the dog food because AAFCO requires all dog food ingredients to be listed in order of predominance by their weight.
The first ingredient in the Canidae All Life Stages Chicken and Rice canned formula is chicken, which contains 10 of the essential amino acids necessary for dogs to maintain life. Next, we found chicken broth, which is not very nutritional but provides a natural chicken flavor.
Number three on the list is chicken liver, which is packed with nutrients. It is rich in amino acids and high-quality proteins. It’s also a wonderful source of zinc, copper, iron, as well as Vitamin B-complex. The Omega-3 and Omega-6 in it are responsible for your dog’s silky, smooth coat. Vitamin A in the liver will be for eyesight.
The source of fatty acids appears lower down the list in the form of salmon oil, which is commendable. Salmon oil is naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA types of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high-quality fats boast the highest bio-availability to dogs and humans. A rich fiber source is added as natural vegetable gelatin in the form of agar-agar.
Like the dry version of Canidae All Life Stages, the canned version also contains the controversial ingredient, sodium selenite. However, it is low on the list and the only controversial ingredient in this product. Next, the ingredients list shows the minerals are chelated. Minerals that have been chemically attached to proteins make absorption easier.
Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.
As a group, the 4 Canidae All Life Stages Canned Dog Food varieties features an average protein content of 36% and a mean fat level of 26%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 30% for the overall product line, and a fat-to-protein ratio of about 72%. All this means this Canidae product line contains near-average protein, above-average fat, and above-average carbs when compared to a typical dry dog food.
Canidae All Life Stages is a grain-inclusive canned dog food without plant-based proteins and uses a notable amount of named meats as its main source of animal protein, thus earning the brand 4.5 stars.
Dog Food Care highly recommends Canidae All Life Stages Canned grain-inclusive dog food.
3. Nutritional Profile of Canidae PURE Grain Inclusive Canned Dog Food
Canidae created a line of grain-free, limited ingredient recipes with plenty of variety to satisfy the nutritional requirements of any canine companion. All of their grain-free options contain limited ingredients, which means they include no fillers, and no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

The PURE line was designed to provide better nutrition for our canine companions without removing the flavor they crave. None of the Canidae PURE recipes contains more than 10 whole food ingredients, and the first few ingredients are high-quality animal proteins, like real lamb. Since they use limited ingredients, they work well for dogs with any digestive issues. All these features make the Canidae Pure Grain-Free range somewhat pricey.
Analyzing the first 10 ingredients in dog food is a great way to understand the overall nutrient content of the dog food because AAFCO requires all dog food ingredients to be listed in order of predominance by their weight.
The first ingredient in this dog food is salmon, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, but containing almost 73% water. Cooking the Salmon will remove most of that moisture, reducing the meat content to just a fraction of its original weight.
The second and third ingredients, salmon meal and menhaden fish meal, are added to make up for the lost salmon protein because they are considered meat concentrates. Fish meal contains almost 300% more protein than fresh fish. Menhaden fish are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and they pose no danger of mercury contamination since they are not a deep-water species.
The fourth ingredient is sweet potato, a gluten-free source of complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and beta-carotene in dog food. Fifth are peas, another quality source of carbohydrates, and like all legumes, they’re rich in natural fiber.
The sixth ingredient is canola oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, but controversial because the source could be genetically modified rapeseed. Fish oil, equally rich in omega-3 might have been a better choice. Fiber-rich sun-cured alfalfa is next, followed by potato, considered a gluten-free source of digestible carbohydrates.
Toward the end of the ingredient list, we found dried Lactobacillus casei fermentation product and dried Lactobacillus Plantarum fermentation product, both probiotics, or good bacteria, added to help support healthy digestion. Furthermore, the ingredients list shows the minerals are chelated, making them easier to absorb. Taurine, an important amino acid, associated with heart health, is an important amino acid in this recipe.
As a group, the Canidae PURE grain-free dried dog food range features an average protein content of 32% and a mean fat level of 16%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 44% for the overall product line, and a fat-to-protein ratio of about 50%. This means this Canidae range contains above-average named protein sources, near-average fat, and below-average carbs compared to other dried dog foods.
Even when you consider the protein-boosting effect of the alfalfa meal and peas, this looks like the profile of dog food containing a notable amount of meat. Dog Food Care recommends Canidae PURE grain-free range of kibble with enthusiasm.

With just six key ingredients, this limited ingredient wet dog food starts with real salmon and also includes sweet potatoes and peas to provide your pup with the goodness she needs. It is nutritionally dense, and the premium protein promotes lean, strong muscles.
Analyzing the first 10 ingredients in dog food is a great way to understand the overall nutrient content of the dog food because AAFCO requires all dog food ingredients to be listed in order of predominance by their weight.
The first ingredient in this dog food recipe is salmon, an oily marine and freshwater fish not only high in protein but also omega-3 fatty acids, essential oils required by every dog to sustain life. The second ingredient is fish broth, followed by vegetable broth. Broths are of only modest nutritional value, but they add both natural flavor and moisture to dog food.
Gluten-free complex carbs, dietary fiber, and beta-carotene come from sweet potatoes, and the starchy part of peas is added for additional protein–at a lower biological value than meat. Whole peas are also on the list for their natural fiber.
Sunflower oil and Salmon oil are both used in the formula. Sunflower oil for omega-6 fatty acids, and Salmon oil for its natural richness in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high-quality fats boast the highest bio-availability to dogs and humans.
Next, the ingredients list shows the minerals are chelated minerals. Minerals that have been chemically attached to protein makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.
As a group, the Canidae PURE grain-free canned range features an average protein content of 39% and a mean fat level of 28%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 25% for the overall product line, and a fat-to-protein ratio of about 72%. This means this Canidae’s product line contains near-average protein, above-average fat, and below-average carbs compared to other canned dog food.
Even when you consider the protein-boosting effect of pea protein and peas, this looks like the profile of a wet dog food containing a notable amount of meat. Canidae Grain Free Pure is a wet dog food using a moderate amount of named meats as its dominant source of animal protein, thus receiving 4 stars. Therefore, Dog Food Care can confidently recommend Canidae PURE Grain-Free Canned food to dog owners of all breeds and all life stages.
5. Nutritional Profile of Canidae PURE Petite Grain-Free LID Dry Dog Food

Canidae Pure Petite Grain-Free Limited Ingredient Dinners deliver compact nutrition and include prebiotics and probiotics to help support a healthy gut. Canidae PURE Petite dinner trays are specially formulated limited ingredient diets to help you maintain the optimal health of your small breed furry friends.
Analyzing the first 10 ingredients in dog food is a great way to understand the overall nutrient content of the dog food because AAFCO requires all dog food ingredients to be listed in order of predominance by their weight.
The first ingredient in Canidae Petite Adult Chicken grain-free is chicken, and although it is a quality protein source, chicken’s water content is about 73% of the weight. Therefore, Chicken Meal, is added–a valuable meat concentrate with about 300% more protein than fresh chicken to replace the protein loss after cooking the fresh chicken.
Chicken fat, skimmed off the soupy water after cooking the chicken, is at number six. Chicken fat is high in linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid essential for life, and freeze-dried chicken also features within the first 10 ingredients.
Starting at number three, among the first 10 ingredients are Peas, Lentils, Tapioca, Garbanzo Beans, and Flaxseed. Here are the benefits these five ingredients bring: Lentils, Garbanzo Beans, and Peas contribute protein and fiber.
In moderation, lentils also provide B vitamins, phosphorus, iron, zinc, and carotenoids among others. And in turn, Garbanzo Beans, also called Chickpeas, are rich in lecithin, potassium, magnesium, copper, Vitamin B9 (folate), and a wide variety of other vitamins.
Let’s not overlook Flaxseed, which is typically added for the healthy skin and coat of your furry friend. Flaxseed contains omega fatty acids and is especially high in the omega-6 fatty acid, Linoleic Acid. Only Tapioca seems unnecessary–often used as a carbohydrate in grain-free dog food. However, apart from starch, tapioca lacks other nutrients. It is often used as a low-grade filler in dog food.
We also note the use of taurine, an important amino acid associated with the healthy function of the heart muscle. Next, the ingredients list shows the minerals that are chelated. Minerals that have been chemically attached to proteins make them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods. The fermentation ingredients toward the end of the ingredients list provide probiotics for your doggy dude’s gut health.
Canidae PURE Petite dry dog foods are smaller kibble for small breed mouths, with irresistible freeze-dried coating and ingredients you can recognize. This product line has a significant percentage of meat, poultry, or fish among the first 5 or 10 lines that provide animal-based proteins, despite the plant-related protein booster. Therefore, the Canidae PURE Petite Grain-Free kibble deserves a 5-star rating, and is enthusiastically recommended by Dog Food Care.

Analyzing the first 10 ingredients in dog food is a great way to understand the overall nutrient content of the dog food because AAFCO requires all dog food ingredients to be listed in order of predominance by their weight.
The first four ingredients in the Terrine Style Chicken and Pea Dinner are Chicken Broth, Chicken, Turkey, and Chicken Liver.
First on the list is Chicken broth, often used as a healthy natural flavor or instead of water when making dog food. It makes dogs more likely to eat the food and adds moisture. However, although broth doesn’t provide a lot of nutritional value, it is better than adding artificial flavors.
Chicken, which contains 10 of the essential amino acids necessary for dogs to maintain life, is second on the ingredients list.
At number three, we find Turkey, a lean protein that is highly digestible and helps build muscles. Protein from turkey meat gives your dog the energy he needs.
Number four on the list is chicken liver, which is packed with nutrients. It is rich in amino acids and high-quality proteins. It’s also a wonderful source of zinc, copper, iron, as well as Vitamin B-complex. The Omega-3 and Omega-6 in it are responsible for your dog’s silky, smooth coat. Vitamin A in the liver is good for eyesight.
Peas are at number five… and number six? Many cheaper dog foods contain peas in multiple forms, and nothing more than fillers. However, Canidae is a high-quality dog food, and why they would have both within the first six ingredients baffles me. I can tell you that peas are not only a source of protein and fiber. Although they are starchy, they are also high in vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc. We consider this a healthy dog food ingredient.
The seventh ingredient is Dicalcium Phosphate, a food additive that’s used as a calcium supplement and to add extra texture to food.
At numbers eight, nine, and ten we find Cassia Gum, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum. These are natural ingredients used to stabilize the liquid and prevent the oil and water from separating. They also cause the gel-like texture of the broth or sauce you find in canned meat products.
Up to here, we’ve found no controversial or dangerous ingredients, and those that follow are also beneficial for your precious pup’s health. The minerals are chelated, making them easier to digest, and Pyridoxine hydrochloride is the most common form used when supplementing pet foods with the B-vitamin pyridoxine. Pyridoxine is crucial in helping your dog metabolize protein.
Finally, we find Rosemary Extract is frequently used in dog food as a natural antioxidant and preservative. It’s also considered an anti-cancer agent.
As a group, the Canidae Pure Petite grain-free range features a good amount of animal protein, even when you consider the protein-boosting effect of the pea products, flaxseed, lentils and garbanzo beans. Dog Food Care rates the Canidae PURE grain-free Petite range of wet dog food as a 4-Star product for small breed dogs, and recommends it as such.
7. Nutritional Profiles of Canidae Pure LID with Wholesome Grains
With the recent rise of grain-free diets for dogs, many pet parents have concerns about the safety of grain-inclusive ingredients in dog food.
However, some whole grains provide dogs with important digestible nutrients including energy, protein, vitamin E and linoleic acid. It is those nutrients that are crucial to a dog’s overall health.
Canidae PURE range of limited ingredient diets offers doggy parents three recipes containing wholesome grains. They are formulated with real meat, poultry, or fish first and wholesome grains including barley, oatmeal, and brown rice – never peas, potatoes, corn, wheat, or soy.
Dog Food Care picked the CANIDAE PURE with Wholesome Grains Real Salmon & Oatmeal Recipe Puppy Dry Dog Food to represent the range of 3 Canidae PURE dry dog food with Wholesome Grains recipes.

Feed your puppy a wholesome meal that’s crafted with her health and overall well-being in mind. CANIDAE PURE with Wholesome Grains Real Salmon & Oatmeal Recipe Puppy Dry Dog Food is free from artificial flavors and contains just nine simple ingredients, including real salmon first, along with grains, like oatmeal.
Analyzing the first 10 ingredients in dog food is a great way to understand the overall nutrient content of the dog food because AAFCO requires all dog food ingredients to be listed in order of predominance by their weight.
The first three ingredients in the Canidae Wholesome Grain Puppy Food are Salmon, salmon meal, and menhaden fish meal. First is Salmon, which offers one of the highest Omega-3 contents of any type of fish. Raw salmon meat contains about 75% water, which is cooked off during the making of dog food. This leaves only a fraction of the protein content in the final product’s weight.
The lost protein is made up by adding salmon meal and menhaden meal. Meat and fish meals are obtained by removing moisture, leaving the concentrated protein to be ground. The resulting meal is four times more protein-rich than fresh fish products, making it a valuable nutrient in dog foods.
Among the next seven ingredients are five wholesome grain ingredients, starting with oatmeal. The low glycemic index of oats helps control blood sugar. And the soluble fiber from whole oats helps manage cholesterol. Oats are high in protein and low in gluten and are a source of carbs, protein, dietary fiber, several B vitamins and dietary minerals like manganese.
Next comes brown rice, which, unlike white rice, still has outer kernel layers. It provides fiber, carbohydrates, and B vitamins, essential for energy metabolism and enzyme function. Brown rice is also a natural magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, and vitamin E source.
At number six we find whole grain sorghum, which offers similar nutrition to corn, is gluten-free and provides nutrients like calcium, iron, and magnesium. Grain-free means that all three edible parts of the kernel (bran, germ, and endosperm) are kept before milling, which means more protein and nutrients are in the final product.
Barley is listed at number eight. It has an exceptionally high-energy content compared to other grains, and it is also rich in B vitamins. Non-hulled barley appears on dog food labels as barley groats and is an excellent fiber source for dogs. Although rarer, barley groats are the preferable form of this grain.
Next on the ingredient list is Canola oil, a healthy source of fat and Omega-3 fatty acids that only contains about half the saturated fat found in other vegetable oils used in dog food.
Suncured alfalfa follows the Canola oil. Alfalfa is a herb with many health benefits, including arthritis pain relief, and it’s loaded with important nutrients. It is high in protein and is loaded with Vitamins A, B12, C, D, E, and K. Alfalfa contains several minerals including potassium, calcium, manganese, phosphorous, zinc, and magnesium. It is also very high in the antioxidant chlorophyll.
The natural flavor listed next is likely obtained from the broth when boiling Salmon, which is this recipe’s primary ingredient. The rest of the ingredients are made up of various minerals, some of which are chelated to ease digestion, and probiotics in the form of fermentation ingredients.
As a group, the Canidae Pure Wholesome Grains dry dog food contains a good amount of animal protein. Dog Food Care rates the 3 recipes 4-Star kibble for dogs of all life stages, one of them specifically formulated for puppies. We recommend it enthusiastically for dog owners who want to move away from grain-free diets to wholesome grains for the health of their doggy dudes.

Canidae chooses a variety of delicious farm-grown ingredients for their Under the Sun recipes. They include single animal proteins like lamb, chicken, or whitefish paired with a bounty of fruits and vegetables like carrots, peas, butternut squash, pumpkin, blueberries, and more.
Analyzing the first 10 ingredients in dog food is a great way to understand the overall nutrient content of the dog food because AAFCO requires all dog food ingredients to be listed in order of predominance by their weight.
The first ingredient in Canidae Under the Sun grain-free lamb recipe is lamb meal, a quality protein source 300% more concentrated in protein than fresh lamb. This is because fresh lamb contains about 73% water, which is lost during the cooking process, leaving only an insignificant amount of protein. Whole lamb appears lower down the list.
The three ingredients following are green peas, garbanzo beans, and yellow peas. They all contain protein and might be seen as ingredient splitting, which is the practice of adding several plant-based proteins to boost the overall protein content at a lower cost. However, these three ingredients contain multiple healthy nutrients along with protein.
Green peas and yellow peas are good sources of carbs, fiber, and protein. Peas are starchy but high in vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, and zinc. We consider peas healthy dog food ingredients. Garbanzo Beans, also called Chickpeas, are rich in lecithin, potassium, magnesium, copper, vitamin B9 (folate), and a wide variety of other vitamins.
The fifth ingredient is canola oil. Unfortunately, canola can be a controversial item. That’s because it can sometimes (but not always) be derived from genetically modified rapeseed.
Yet others cite the fact canola oil can be a significant source of essential omega-3 fatty acids.
In any case, plant-based oils like canola are less biologically available to a dog than fish oil as a source of quality omega-3 fats.
The Alfalfa on the list is a herb with many health benefits, including arthritis pain relief, and it’s loaded with important nutrients. It is high in protein and is loaded with Vitamins A, B12, C, D, E, and K. Alfalfa contains several minerals including potassium, calcium, manganese, phosphorous, zinc, and magnesium. It is also very high in the antioxidant chlorophyll.
Let’s not overlook flaxseed, which is typically added for the healthy skin and coat of your furry friend. Flaxseed contains omega fatty acids and is especially high in the omega-6 fatty acid, Linoleic Acid.
We also note the use of taurine, an important amino acid associated with the healthy function of the heart muscle. Next, the ingredients list shows the minerals that are chelated. Minerals that have been chemically attached to protein makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.
After examining the ingredients, we found that the Canidae Under the Sun range of grain-free kibble contains above-average protein, below-average fat, and above-average carbs when compared to other dry dog foods.
Dog Food Care recommends Under the Sun Grain-Free Dog Foods as a 4-Star Kibble at an affordable price.
