Has Abound Dog Food Been Recalled?

As of the time of this review, Abound dog food products have faced food recalls twice. Both instances involved Abound Chicken & Brown Rice recipe dog food and each took place in singular locations. In November of 2018, the FDA recalled four and fourteen-pound bags of Abound Chicken & Brown Rice dog food from a Harris Teeter located in Matthews, North Carolina.

The FDA stated that the recall was due to the presence of dangerously high levels of vitamin D. When consumed in excess, vitamin D can be toxic and can cause serious health problems, including vomiting, kidney failure, renal failure, and death.

In December of 2018, the FDA again recalled four-pound bags of Abound Chicken & Brown Rice dog food. On this occasion, the recall affected a single Kroger location in Louisville, Kentucky. This recall was also the result of dangerously high vitamin D levels. In this instance, the FDA’s report stated that samples of the food contained as much as seventy times the intended vitamin D amount, leading to further vitamin D toxicity.

Individual Recipe Ratings

The list below contains all of the products currently available on Amazon, as well as their current Amazon rating. Recipe Ingredient Analysis

We chose Abound Natural Superfood Blend dog food to represent the brand in our recipe content analysis. As with all dog foods, the ingredients are listed according to their overall weight in the formula. This weight includes each ingredient’s water content.

The first ingredient in this recipe is salmon, which is considered a quality protein source. It’s important to note though that the weight of this ingredient can be up to 80% water. This means that a significant portion of the meat’s weight may be lost when its moisture is cooked off, and thus could indicate a smaller overall presence in the kibble than the ingredients may initially suggest.

Regardless of this, salmon serves as an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can support your dog’s immune system and coat health. It’s also packed with B-vitamins, including B3, B6, and B12 vitamins, which can help reduce joint inflammation and improve brain and nervous system functions.

The second ingredient is brewer’s rice. Brewer’s rice is composed of small rice kernels that fractured and broke off of larger rice kernels during the milling process. As a grain by-product, it’s generally considered to be a low-quality filler ingredient with little nutritional value. Additionally, it is high in dense carbs that can contribute to obesity. Despite all this, it is an easily digestible fiber that can provide quick energy to your pet.

The third ingredient is barley. This common cereal grain is low in cholesterol and high in dietary fiber. It’s known to be a great energy source and is packed with vitamin B, manganese, and phosphorus, as well as small amounts of protein. However, it also has a high carbohydrate content that can be problematic for heavier dogs.

The fourth ingredient is chicken meal. Chicken meal is produced from dried, ground chicken meat. It provides an excellent, concentrated source of protein to support lean muscle growth and maintenance. The fifth ingredient is oatmeal. This grain is rich in nutrients such as vitamin B, linoleic acid, and omega-6 fatty acids, which support skin and coat health. It is also packed with essential minerals and antioxidants.

Additionally, oatmeal is high in easily digestible soluble fiber, which helps regulate your dog’s digestive tract and blood glucose levels. You should keep in mind that this is another high-carb ingredient though. The sixth listed ingredient is chicken fat, which is preserved with mixed tocopherols.

Tocopherols might sound like intimidating chemical additives, but, in actuality, they are natural preservatives added to maintain dog food’s quality and palatability. They’re also a good source of vitamin E. The chicken fat itself is rendered during the chicken cooking process and contains both linoleic acid and omega-6 fatty acids. Both of these provide support for healthy skin and coats.

The seventh listed ingredient is canola meal. Canola meal is a by-product of removing canola oil from its seed. It’s a protein source rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that help build and maintain your pup’s vital systems. This ingredient can be controversial though, as the production of this meal may involve the use of seeds from GMO plants.

The eighth listed ingredient is dried egg product. Dried egg product refers to eggs that have been separated from their shells and then dried. This provides an easily digestible source of essential proteins, fats, amino acids, and fatty acids. The ninth listed ingredient is pea protein. Pea protein is a legume by-product that is produced when peas are processed. This plant-based protein is a good source of iron and essential amino acids like lysine.

Lysine and iron both contribute to the healthy development and maintenance of canine muscular and immune systems. There has been some controversy surrounding this ingredient recently though, as the FDA has been investigating a potential link between this ingredient and heart disease in dogs.

The tenth listed ingredient is dried yeast. Dried yeast is protein-rich and packed with B-vitamins, which can help your dog convert consumed nutrients into usable energy. It’s also used to improve dog food’s palatability and digestibility. This is another controversial ingredient though, as some dogs have yeast allergies.

That covers the first ten ingredients of our representative dog food brand. As the most prevalent ingredients in the mix, these are the first components that you’ll want to consider when deciding to purchase Abound brand food. Next, we’ll look at some of the less prevalent ingredients in the recipe, which you may want to consider when making your purchasing decision.

Abound Dog Food in Bowl

Less Prevalent Ingredients

Pumpkin is a nutritious inclusion that falls just shy of being within Abound Superfood Blend dog food’s top ten listed ingredients. This tasty, fibrous fruit adds vitamin A, C, and E to the recipe, along with healthy doses of potassium and iron.

Natural flavor may strike you as too vague to be an actual ingredient, but it’s commonly used in dog food to refer to mixes of various spices, broths, and yeasts. Recipes include such mixes to enhance the flavor and palatability of kibble. Fish oil is another ingredient rich in the omega-3 fatty acids that contribute to your dog’s skin, coat, and joint health.

Nutrient Summary

The nutrient data included in this summary is calculated based on the product’s dry matter content. We use the Guaranteed Analysis panel to compare the protein, fat, fiber, and moisture levels in pet food products. The structure of this analysis makes it difficult to compare wet food products with dry food products due to the extreme difference in moisture content. Thus, this information should be viewed mainly in comparison to other dry food options.

Abound Superfood Blend dog food contains roughly 26% crude protein. This protein is primarily sourced from salmon and chicken meal, which are quality protein sources appropriate for an average adult dog. This recipe also consists of 16% crude fat. Much of that fat appears to come from the chicken fat and dried egg product inclusions.

Finally, this formula has a carbohydrate content of approximately 40%. Most of these carbs are from brewer’s rice, barley, and oatmeal, which also contribute a large amount of fiber, vitamins, and minerals to this dry dog food. While active dogs will be able to handle this high amount of carbs, dogs with weight issues should probably avoid this product.

This product is rich in omega-3 fatty acids from salmon, chicken fat, and fish oil. This makes it an excellent option for dogs that struggle with maintaining healthy skin and coats. Additionally, it’s packed with grains, yeast, and natural flavors to produce a highly palatable, easily digestible kibble that will please picky pups.

Our Rating of Abound Dog Food

On average, Abound brand dog food products contain 26% protein, 16% fat, and 50% carbohydrates. This data indicates an average level of protein, an average level of fat, and a slightly higher level of carbs in comparison to other dry dog food brands.

We consider Abound dog food to be a mid-grade brand. As opposed to many other store-brand products, Abound dry food features no wheat, corn, soy, or animal by-product meal in any of its recipes. It also has a varied product lineup, with both grain-inclusive and grain-free options.

Additionally, Abound brand food sources protein from a wide variety of quality protein sources to account for different preferences and allergies in dogs. In consideration of all of these factors, we give Abound dog food a rating of 4 stars.

What Do Others Say About Abound

As of this review, Abound brand dog food products have Amazon ratings between 3.5 and 4.5 stars. Our chosen representative product, Abound Natural Superfood Blend, Salmon, Egg, & Pumpkin dog food, has a 4-star rating. A majority of users appreciate this brand’s formulas, with some individuals even claiming that their pets won’t eat food from any other brand. Here are a couple of reviews from actual customers:

“It is hands down the favorite dog food we’ve ever tried. My corgis just love it. It smells fresh and is moist and they absolutely love it.”

“My dog is hooked on this stuff; we love it. We did a side by side taste test and he prefers Abound Salmon Superfood over Rachel Ray.”

Final Thoughts

Abound brand dog food features a highly palatable and digestible formula that will satisfy even the fussiest of pets. Despite this, pet owners will occasionally have trouble convincing their pooch to eat any brand of dry dog food. This could be a sign of larger health issues with your pup, and you should carefully consider why your dog won’t eat. Treating the true cause of these issues will help your best friend get back to enjoying mealtime for years to come.

Sarah Wagner is an animal lover and the proud dog-mom of a Golden Retriever named Brody and an Italian Greyhound named Jessup. Unfortunately, Jessup developed serious allergies to many different types of dog foods and ingredients when she was just a puppy. Meanwhile, Brody could eat seemingly anything and carry on as healthy as could be. Sarah spent hours of time researching and testing different foods and brands before finding something that worked for little Jessup. She wants Dog Food Care to simplify this experience for future dog-parents who face food allergy or tolerance issues of their own.
